The story of guns in Haiti

Protection of the people in Haiti has always been seen as a role for government, however, certain individuals - over the years - have taken it upon themselves to lead self-appointed militia. They set their own laws, their own territories, and their and agendas. It is not so surprising in a country where confidence in formal instutions such as police and judiciary is close to non-existent, these branches are often political arms of the government. And with such governmental instability and corruption that has existed in our lifetime, these militia oten provide more apparent stability and security than the government.

But a democracy cannot have a foundation on self-appointed militia and a government attempting to re-establish democracy and stability where it has not been in a while.

So it piqued my interest when the leader of the peace-keeping forces, Brazil, came up with a novel, creative approach to helping to solve the problem of roving militia with guns across Haiti (including lots of kids). And their solution related to one of Haiti's passions: football, soccer for us stateside. So I looked into it a bit....
