*Americans Warned of Continued Haiti Danger*
Friday May 27, 2005 12:01 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department warned Americans on Thursday that travel to Haiti was dangerous and that it had ordered all U.S. personnel whose jobs were not essential to depart.
Also, the statement said, family members of all American diplomats were being instructed to leave Haiti.
Otherwise, U.S. citizens were advised to defer travel to the country, where supporters of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide were demanding his return from exile. And Americans who live in Haiti were advised to leave, if they could depart safely.
There is no effective police force in much of Haiti and the potential for looting, the presence of roadblocks set up by armed gangs or by the police and the possibility of random violent crime, including kidnappings and assaults, call for vigilance, the department said.
The U.S. embassy has imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the announcement said.
