A 65-year-old Montreal businesswoman who lives in Haiti was kidnapped from her home in Port-au-Prince on the weekend.

The woman's husband, who is a dual citizen of Canada and Haiti, says her kidnappers want a ransom of $300,000 US.

The woman runs a phone card business based in Haiti's capital.

Her family said she was in her home when kidnappers broke in and took her away.

Foreign Affairs spokesperson Reynald Doiron says Canadian Embassy officials are monitoring the situation.

"A kidnapping situation for ransom purposes of course smells, let's say, of criminal activity rather than ideologically motivated [activity]," he said. "We hope her life is not in danger."

The woman's husband, who lives in Montreal, says he believes her life is in danger.

Doiron added that the woman's identity is being kept under wraps in order to protect her.
