So how does the top of Laurie's skull stay in place and not fall through the hole once the surgeon is putting everything back together?

Laurie's brother Tom and I were having this very discussion, even getting into nuances such as, maybe they do a 'pumpkin cut' so it would lay back at an angle without falling in, etc...it seemed a long shot.

This week I asked the surgeon what he actually did.

Once Laurie's skull was cut and they removed the cut out, they inserted (I assume on the underside of Laurie's skull) some titanium brackets that (I also assume) overlapped so when they put the cut out back in place, it did not just fall in. Ta da!! The pumpkin theory, while good, works better with thick, high density fiber food shells; less so on critical, thin head shells.

Anyway, so they screwed these titanium plates in place, placed the skull cut out back in place on it, and screwed it in place near where the skin had been cut. And he finished it all off and stapled the skin back together. I understand a healthy head heals quickly.

Sorry if the details made you squirm a bit.
