THANKSGIVING 20010

Last night was family movie night and we watched Madea’s Big Happy Family – the Madea movies have really become an absolute favorite of ours.  These movies are written directed and produced by Tyler Perry, who also plays the title character in each, the matriarchal figure, ‘Madea’.  This newest one (2010) was so good I had to blog it.  This one is not rated and I would suggest to you PG-13, for adult themes.  I had no idea when I rented it that this one was is in fact a musical, so if you are not so inclined, you may want to pass it and check another one out.  The quality of the music and singing is nothing less than exceptional but if music is not for you, there are others.

If I had to sum up the ‘Madea’ movies in general (including this musical), they are composed of a few key elements.  Chock full of humor (sometimes a bit edgy), they are not afraid to touch on sometimes difficult situations or topics, the center of attention is usually ‘Madea’, played by Tyler Perry, much in the same way as Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire, but on steroids, and there is always what I consider to be a rock solid message to the audience, in a way you just do not see anywhere.  It’s not preachy and the messages are very real and are right on target.  Try it.

I probably related especially strongly to this one because one of its main themes was a main character discovering early on that she is dying of a terminal illness and has to tell her dysfunctional, adult children.  It caught my attention. The main gist of the story is about the kids, their dysfunctions they were so wrapped up with and the crisis it took this crisis to bring them together; not a new message, but you will find it unique, relatable and very moving at times.
